President Doofus #1

george W. bush (AKA "President Doofus") was surely one of our very worst presidents. Are we on the verge of electing someone with the potential of being even worse?

The image below, one you might be familiar with, captures just one of 43's MANY doofy moments. An incident that reminded me of a specific Far Side cartoon that concerned "gifted" people. Look at the expression on the former preznit's face in the picture below. Does he not look like he is "gifted" like the student in the Far Side cartoon?

Image1: gwb attempts to leave a 11/20/2005 news conference in Beijing via a locked door. Door thwarts quick exit for Bush (article excerpt) After answering just six questions from a group of US reporters, the president strode away heading toward the door. President Bush tugged at both handles on the double doors before admitting: "I was trying to escape. Obviously, it didn't work". [bush later blamed jet lag]. Mr Bush was in China in the latest stop of his East Asia tour.

Image2: Cartoon from The Far Side (1980-1995) by Gary Larson that reminds me of the gwb pic above.

  1. Dervish, this is a topic you and I won't agree on, being from different sides of the political aisle.

I don't think 43 was the "worst" president in our history. I voted for him twice and I did like him. I didn’t like some of the things he did. But I don’t think there has ever been a president that I could agree with 100%.

My list of "worst" presidents: Jackson, Wilson, FDR, Johnson, Carter and Obama. I list them for various reasons, but mostly due to their progressive agendas, which as a Conservative, I don't and can't agree with.

As far as GW trying to go through the wrong door, I remember that. It was funny. I can definitely find humor where there is some!

  2. Best: FDR. Honorable mention: LBJ (for his Great Society. Misses Best rating due to Vietnam). Potential Best list addition: BHO. Hypothetical Best list addition: B-S.

Worst (personal, not historical): #1 RWR, #2 gwb. Potential Worst list addition: DJT.

    1. As I said, you and I will not agree.

If not for Wilson, who was FDR's inspiration, we wouldn't have the New Deal and The Great Society. Both of which has been, in my opinion, the downfall of this country. And Johnson was a racist. I also believe he had something to do with Kennedy's death.

But, hey, differing opinions are what makes the world go round!

  3. Ad here folks we see above that which stands in the way of potentially great things. Partisanship. As it is, as it always has been, and ss it likely always will be.

The focus on progressive, conservative, moderate, political party, ideology, etc. rather than common sense solutions supported by credible data and logic is our biggest problem.

Politicians concerned with staying in office and maintaining their share of power is one of the roots of corruption.

    1. RN, I see no reason to fight with someone over their personal opinions. I won't change anyone's mind, and no one is going to change my mind. I believe we should disagree with dignity.

And you are correct. If our politicians worked together on common sense solution rather than their ideology, we'd be in much better shape than we're in now--and getting worse.

But, as you said, they are only worried about staying in office and power.

    2. This is just my opinion Pamela but one should always keep an active questioning mind. I view that as maintaining the ability and willingness to change ones opinion or beliefs in the face of new and credible evidence/arguments.

Perhaps it's just me but that is what true objectivism demands.

  4. If Republicans decided to move to the Center and compromise I'd support that (the change in the Republican Party as well as the compromising). Problem is, they keep moving farther to the Right. Check out the current Republican Platform. (NYT: Emerging Republican Platform Goes Far to the Right).

Donald Trump's opposition to the TPP and support for Planned Parenthood notwithstanding (and any other "Progressive" positions he might have professed to hold). His selection of Pence as his VP nullifies all of that IMO. If I believed him in the first place. Pence is FAR Right. And, might end up being the defacto president if Trump is elected.

I don't like Trump but I am glad he picked someone far right as his VP.

  5. Pamela1: If not for Wilson... we wouldn't have the New Deal and The Great Society. Both of which has been, in my opinion, the downfall of this country. And Johnson was a racist. I also believe he had something to do with Kennedy's death.

The New Deal and the Great Society produced immediate benefits. The fact that Republicans were elected following these presidents - and then they went about scaling back/attempting to get rid of New Deal and Great Society programs - is a contributing factor to the downfall of this country. The MAIN contributing factor was the presidency of RWR. It was under his presidency that we began running up massive debts (via tax cuts for the wealthy and huge increases in military spending). Prosperity for all would be assurred with the passage of FDR's 2nd bill of rights and bringing back LBJ's Great Society, but doing MORE. Failing any movement in that direction, I see the slow creep of increasing oligarchy continuing. As it has under ALL presidents since Reagan.

Johnson was a product of his times and environment. Despite being racist he STILL did the right thing by pushing for and signing Civil Rights legislation. Despite him knowing it would cost his party the south for decades to come. Johnson had nothing to do with Kennedy's death. The evidence points to Richard Nixon and The Mob (see my post on the subject here).

Pamela2: If our politicians worked together on common sense solution rather than their ideology, we'd be in much better shape than we're in now - and getting worse. ...they are only worried about staying in office and power.

Republicans got together on the night of Obama's innaguration and decided they wouldn't work with Obama (the meeting is known as the Caucus Room Conspiracy). Which is why, even when Obama proposed legislation that was endorsed by Republicans previously, they opposed it. They reasoned that strategy would make Obama a one term president. Proof positive that it's Republicans who are only worried about staying in office and power. You and RN buying of this false narrative is testament to the success of the Republican strategy. Sad.

Pamela3: And imo if the Democrats moved to the Center and compromised I might support them! I don't like Trump but I am glad he picked someone far right as his VP.

Before publishing I clicked on your ID to see if someone was spoofing you. A genuine comment, but possibly a joke? Pence is terrible. He is a Christian reconstructionist who believes in legislating Old Testament morality. Frank Schaeffer on the Thom Hartmann radio program (7/21/2016) said that would mean "...stone gay people to death, adulterers need to be punished. The equivalent today is ISIS". Also according to Schaeffer, "Pence, not only wanted to make abortion illegal, but in the state of Indiana, signed a law that said that business owners had the right to discriminate against gay people. ... to them, religious liberty equals taking away civil rights from other people". (read more about how frightening Pence as defacto president would be here. Note: this is a link to Frank Schaeffer's blog).
